How long does the application process take?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Completed applications may become Waitlisted in one to three weeks.\u00a0 Applicants must submit all verifications with the application for faster processing.<\/p>\n<p>The MHHC accepts completed applications during Waitlist open period on location at 615 E. Hovey Avenue, Muskegon Heights, MI 49444.\u00a0 Call (231) 733-2033 Extension 108 to schedule an appointment between the hours of 8:00 am \u2013 4:00 pm.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. What if I do not get Child Support?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Child Support is considered income and verified according to Admissions and Continued Occupancy Policy. (ACOP) If you do not receive child support, one must go to the Friend of the Court\u2019s office and obtain documentation stating the child\u2019s name, case number, and amount paid, charged, or declaration of \u201cno case opened\u201d for ___ (insert name of the child.)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Can I omit a family member if I cannot find a birth certificate or social security card?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The head of household may not opt to remove a household member from the family composition to avoid compliance with document requirements.\u00a0 MHHC is obliged to accept original documents issued by federal, state, or local government agencies which contain the name and Social Security Numbers for persons registered on the lease.<\/p>\n<p>Proof of purchase of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitalrecordsgov.com\/\">replacement birth certificat<\/a>e or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/myaccount\/?gclid=CjwKCAjw-sqKBhBjEiwAVaQ9a9u26jsMSsXQZPJwQXD8wlgN6j7UfFtcD_LRwPduBe6rssxdr1EMFhoCgEEQAvD_BwE\">social security card<\/a>\u00a0will allow the application process to continue with Waitlist placement for 60 calendar days to validate required documents.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Why are my verifications not accepted?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The verification requirements are defined by federal regulations and start with initial screening for eligibility, initial certification, annual and interim reexaminations.\u00a0 Re-verification is annual or may also occur when updated information obtained is subject to change, and thus triggers reverification. The 60-calendar day requirement remains in place.\u00a0 Should verification proof be attached to application, return all attachment pages with the application.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>5. Can I have a pet?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Tenants must register their eligible pet to receive written permission from the Housing Commission, and if required, satisfy payment of a non-refundable deposit of $150.00.\u00a0 At no time will MHHC approve exotic pets such as snakes, monkeys, game pets, etc., unless the pet is a State sanctioned emotional or physical support animal.<\/p>\n<p>Only one cat or dog will be allowed per apartment. Pets over 30 pounds or 20 inches high may not be approved.\u00a0 There may be no more than two birds caged per apartment. The MHHC has no limit on the number of fish.\u00a0 However, the size of the tank may not exceed 20 gallons.\u00a0 Applicants are encouraged to pick up a Pet Policy Application from the office and if applicable read policy for emotional or physical support animals.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>6. Do I need to complete a credit or background check?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>HUD does not require a specific credit score for Public Housing. A review of the applicant\u2019s credit history is to determine how well financial obligations are met. The lack of credit is not sufficient grounds to reject an applicant.<\/p>\n<p>However, a criminal background check and two years of positive rental history are standard requirements. Sex offenders cannot live in Public Housing.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>7. What are some reasons for the denial of the Public Housing application?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Applications denial for previous evictions or non-verifiable rental history can happen. Denial can also occur from inability to contact previous landlords, not responding to update letters, illegal alien status, incomplete application, FTA, Damage to Property, Assaults, DUI or drug charges, theft, and disorderly conduct.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>8. How do I register my car with MHHC?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>All tenants with automobiles on -site need registration and proof of insurance in their name.\u00a0 Bring documents to the office to receive a free sticker to place in a car window.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>9. Is it safe to live in Muskegon Heights?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Muskegon Heights Housing Commission now has security agreements with area public safety offices including City of Muskegon Heights, City of Muskegon and Norton shores Police department as well as Michigan State Police.\u00a0 Our on-site security staff monitors cameras and works closely with police to report suspicious activity or crime. We cater to families and implement security checks to make sure everyone is safe.\u00a0 MHHC has a playground with security cameras.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>10. My Birth Certificate or Social Security card is old and hard to read.
